The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing and grace, offered to those who are seriously ill or facing the challenges of aging. This sacrament provides spiritual support, preparing individuals to confront their health struggles with faith and courage.
Purpose of the Sacrament
The Anointing of the Sick serves several important purposes:
- Union with Christ’s Passion: This sacrament unites the sick person with the suffering of Christ, fostering a deeper understanding of their own trials and offering spiritual benefits for themselves and the entire Church.
- Strength and Peace: Through this sacrament, individuals receive strength, peace, and courage to endure their suffering in a manner consistent with Christian values.
- Forgiveness of Sins: If the sick person is unable to receive forgiveness through the Sacrament of Penance, Anointing provides an opportunity for the forgiveness of sins.
- Restoration of Health: While not guaranteed, healing may occur if it serves the person’s spiritual well-being.
- Preparation for Eternal Life: The sacrament prepares individuals for their eventual passage into eternal life, providing comfort and hope.
Scriptural Foundation
The practice of Anointing of the Sick is rooted in Scripture. In James 5:14-15, we find guidance on this sacrament:
“Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”
This passage emphasizes the communal aspect of prayer and support within the Church during times of illness.
