The Sacrament of Matrimony is a sacred covenant established between a man and a woman, designed to be a lifelong partnership aimed at the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children. This covenant, when entered into by baptized individuals, is elevated to the dignity of a sacrament by Christ, affirming its profound spiritual significance.
Biblical Foundations
The foundation of marriage is deeply rooted in Sacred Scripture, beginning with the creation of humanity in God’s image and culminating in the vision of the “wedding feast of the Lamb.” Throughout the Bible, marriage is depicted as a divine mystery, reflecting God’s love and intentions for humanity. It illustrates the journey of salvation history, acknowledging both the challenges posed by sin and the renewal offered through Christ and His Church.
Preparation for Marriage
Engaged couples are encouraged to prepare adequately for their marriage. This preparation is not merely about planning external elements such as flowers or receptions but involves a deep spiritual reflection on the sanctity and beauty of the sacrament. Couples should prioritize their spiritual readiness by participating in confession prior to their wedding.
Marriage Classes
To support couples in their preparation, Holy Cross Chaldean Church offers marriage classes. These classes are structured over several weeks and include live presentations, professional videos, and group discussions. Participants are encouraged to register in advance to secure their spot.
Natural Family Planning
The church also provides training in Natural Family Planning (NFP), emphasizing its importance for married life. This training consists of two sessions spaced one month apart, allowing couples to learn effective methods for family planning in harmony with their faith.
Marriage License Requirements
Couples must apply for a marriage license in their county before their wedding. Important points to remember include:
- The license is valid for 30 days from application.
- The church ceremony will serve as both a religious and legal marriage.
- Couples must bring their marriage license to the church at least two weeks before the wedding.
Day of the Wedding Guidelines
On the day of the wedding, several guidelines should be observed:
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early.
- Maintain modest dress standards for all participants.
- Refrain from throwing rice or candy inside or outside the church.
- Ensure that no alcohol is consumed by the wedding party before the ceremony.
Donations and Contributions
While there is no fee required to marry at Holy Cross Chaldean Church, couples are encouraged to consider making a donation to support the church’s future needs. A suggested donation amount will be provided during preparation.
